Volunteers are the heart and hands of our organization. They bring our mission to life. As a volunteer, you can help women and girls from all walks of life acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make sound decisions and improve their lives. You don’t need a finance background — we’ll give you everything you need.
How To Volunteer
Step One: Choose An Opportunity
YourLife Finance Class Instructor
RISE! Guest Speaker
YourLife Finance Classes are 60 minute classes that cover basic personal finance information such as opening a bank account, budgeting, saving and credit.
A majority of our classes are taught between 8am and 6pm.
Classes are held in schools, prisons, domestic violence shelters, social service agencies, colleges, and community centers throughout Houston.
We ask that all volunteers commit to teaching three or more classes a year and have a background check completed.
Our RISE! volunteer guest speakers work with high school girls.
We are looking for women with diverse backgrounds to talk with RISE! groups at Houston-area high schools.
Classes are usually 60 minutes long between 8am and 3pm.
There are two speaking opportunities for RISE!:
Career Path Panel: A panel of two to three professionals discuss their career experiences with students. Coworkers and friends can volunteer together, or we will match you with other panelists.
Credit and Savings Speaker: Guest speakers will receive a copy of our ‘Credit and Saving Instructor Guide’ for this class. This opportunity is best suited for one person or a two-person team.
Step Two: Complete An Application
Administrative volunteer are crucial to our success.
Administrative volunteers prepare class materials, update files, help prepare for special events, and enter data.
We look for committed men and women who can share their passion and attention to detail for at least four hours per week.
All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application before they can begin volunteering. The application lets us know how you would like to be involved and gives us a sense of your strengths.
The Application is short and only takes a few minutes to fill out.
Also, please note the application process includes a basic background check.
Step Three: Attend Orientation or Guest Speaker Training
All volunteers interested in teaching YourLife Finance Classes attend a two-hour orientation, where we teach you everything you need to know and provide materials to help you prepare. We offer volunteer orientations on a monthly basis.
For all of those interested in becoming a RISE! guest speaker, you must also attend a training. Trainings are offered twice per year. Once prior to the fall school semester and once prior to the spring.
5 Reasons to Volunteer
1. You will make a tangible impact in the lives of women and girls.
2. You get to work with other organizations across the city who inspire you while you are teaching for TWR.
3. The gift of financial literacy is one our clients will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
4. You get to meet other like minded individuals who are passionate about financial literacy.
5. The Women's Resource could not do our important work without you!
"With The Women's Resource I found an opportunity to give back to something bigger than myself. The real gift is presenting this valuable information and watching as the clients really get it – the lightbulb moment. I know that my passion is really helping make a difference in their lives."
– Lynn Edmund, volunteer since 2013
