Education
Women who control their money control their destiny.
We educate women, girls and families about budgeting, credit, investing and retirement planning. Seminars have been presented to women on welfare, women in corporations, women probationers, business women, not-for-profit agencies and to children in public and private schools.
Project LEAD (Leadership, Education and Development)
Project LEAD, a collaboration between The Women's Resource of Greater Houston, HISD and Communities in Schools, was established to provide classroom-based leadership and life skills training for at-risk ninth and tenth grade girls. Funded by Houston Endowment, Project LEAD helps young women, who face significant challenges during their transition to responsible adulthood reach their full potential.
Project LEAD History
- Outgrowth of the “Women’s Independence Project”, three years of research, funded by Houston Endowment and conducted by The Women’s Resource of Greater Houston
- Research developed a blueprint for educational programming to help women and girls reach their full potential
- Two ten-week semesters were developed that focus on leadership and self-empowerment skills for high school girls
- 2004 - launched Pilot program at Jeff Davis
- 2005 - first full program at Lee High School; students showed improvement on all post-test scores
- 2007 – added program to additional high schools: Lamar, Challenge and Southwest
Specific instructional topics include:
- Different leadership/learning styles
- Teambuilding
- Values/ethics
- Risk taking
- Community involvement
- Goal setting
- Personal finance
- Personal development
Classes promote:
- Interactive, hands-on learning and developmentally appropriate practice exercises
- Interaction with leaders in the community through local speakers
- Community involvement
- Independence
Specific Goals – Students will be able to:
- Identify qualities of a leader in themselves and others
- Describe their personal values
- List short and long term personal goals
- Prepare a personal budget
- Identify characteristics of credit cards and potential problems with credit card use
- Identify ways of saving money
Financial Literacy Seminars
Seminars are taught by trained volunteers who encourage financial responsibility.
Classes are meant for those handling personal finances for the first time, as well as for more sophisticated investors interested in understanding how to make their money grow. All seminars are 1 to 1 ½ hours in length.

FDIC Money Smart Series
Money Smart is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese. You can sign up for a single class or the entire series.
- Money Smart Bank on It — the basics of banking, the different types of financial institutions and the services they might offer
- Money Smart Check It Out — how to open a checking account, compare and use accounts, write a check and keep records.
- Money Smart Borrowing Basics — overview of when and how to use credit, and the different types of loans available
- Money Smart Pay Yourself First — the power to recognize the importance of saving money, how to save, how money can grow and the different types of savings and investment accounts
- Money Smart To Your Credit — tools to understand a credit report, how it is used, how to start repairing it, and to recognize credit repair scams
- Money Smart Charge it Right — how to describe the costs and benefits of using a credit card
- Money Smart Money Matters — understand the concept of budgeting, recognize the benefits of using a budget, and budgeting tools
